  • The Eucharist and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

The Eucharist is Jesus Christ-His Body, His Blood, His Soul and His Divinity. At the Last Supper Jesus transformed the Passover meal to a ritual sacrifice-the first Mass. He took the unleavened bread and transformed it into His Body. He took the cup of wine and transformed it into His Blood. He told His apostles to "do this in memory of me." The Church has honored the Lord's command by continuing to make Jesus Christ present through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The links below will help you understand why we believe so strongly that the Eucharist is truly Jesus Christ. The video below also provides insight into the Catholic understanding of the Eucharist.

    • The Eucharist is foreshadowed in the Old Testament.
    • The New Testament demonstrates that Christ wasn't speaking symbolically but rather literally concerning the Eucharist.
    • The earliest Christians believed that the Eucharist was really Jesus and not just a symbol.

The Eucharist is the ritual, sacramental action of thanksgiving to God which is the principle Christian liturgical celebration of and communion in the passion, death and resurrection of Christ. The liturgical action called the Eucharist is also traditionally known as the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is one of the seven sacraments of the Church. The Holy Eucharist completes Christian initation. The celebration of the Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life. We celebrate the Eucharist as the primary act of worship of God within the Mass. See the Mass guide we developed to help Catholics understand more fully what is happening at the Mass.
